Abstract: Powder samples, NiNb2O6, MgNb2O6, CaNb2O6, SrNb2O6, BaNb2O6, were prepared by solid state reaction. Crystal structure, optical and powder morphology of the samples were analyzed by XRD, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra and SEM. The photocatalytic properties were investigated by degrading rhodamine B under UV irradiation. The substitution of alkaline-earth metals for Ni improves the photocatalytic activity of MNb2O6. After UV irradiation for 10h, the concentrations of RhB/SrNb2O6 suspension and RhB/BaNb2O6 suspension are degraded to 21% and 37%, respectively.

Key words: niobate, photocatalysis, rhodamine B degradation, alkaline-earth metals
