Interfacial cracks initiated at the free edge can propagate radially toward the central region, causing a progressive delamination. Close to the free edge, the maximum tensile shear stress of 46 MPa occurrs at the bondcoattopcoat interface Fig. 5. This large stress can be attributed to either shear or mixed modes of failure of coatings [ 8 ] .
